 USEFUL INFORMATION

An experiment which companies must not miss, the “Festival d’Avignon” allows them to present their show to spectators or professionals who come especially on purpose.

Though exciting, this experiment remains trying.

Preparing the festival properly beforehand is necessary in order to avoid (or limit) bad surprises on your arrival or stress during your stay.

First of all, it is recommended to choose your theatre, your housing or settle miscellaneous material details – box office, cardboards to stick playbills on, number of leaflets - as soon as possible.

CHOICE OF THE THEATRE

The first thing to take into account is the usual program of the theatre. Some theatres propose specific programmes, others don’t. A consistent programming attracts an audience which is well-informed of the reputation of the venue and might be interested by the rest of the program.

That’s the reason why it is important to know what programming matches best with the style of your show.

The best way of choosing is to have a look at the “festival Off” programmes of the previous years.

The conditions the theatre offers are also important as a lacking service might engender a subsequent extra-cost compared to the renting rate.

Finally, companies should come and visit the theatre in order to form an opinion on the venue.

HOUSING

It is generally an important yet quite expensive issue.

Being well dwelt is vital since hot weather and weariness might weaken the toughest.

There are several solutions : from the camp site to the flat intra-muros or rooms in guest-houses or house in the suburbs. An intra-muros housing is generally slightly more expensive but presents an advantageous proximity with every commodity as Avignon is not such a large town.

PROMOTING

The paper programme of the « Festival Off » remains the main source of information for both spectators and professionals.

Playbills are also important. Well located and numerous enough (provide about 500 since a storm may reduce them to nothing). They should be hung as soon as possible: the best locations are quickly taken. Covering up the other companies’ posters is extremely ill-advised.

According to us, handing leaflets in the street remains highly efficient. It is tiring and it can be trying when the festival visitors happen to be surly, yet it is very conclusive when it is well done. Actually, it’s better to hand not as many leaflets but take time to talk to the visitors or to find a striking slogan. You should get at least 10,000 leaflets -20,000 if you want to be comfortable- and also get someone along with you if you come alone in Avignon !

Playbills as well as leaflets should present the same design, eye-catching enough to be singled out among thousands and it should enclose all essential information – name and address of the theatre, box office telephone number, time of the show. This information can also be printed on banners which can be stuck onto the playbills so that its remainders can be used for the following shows.

Parades are also working well when perfectly prepared and rehearsed. If they are not or if they do not match well with the shows, they should be forgotten.

Press articles should have been sent beforehand then directly addressed to local papers.

Don’t forget either local radio stations (Raje, Cherie FM or France Bleu Vaucluse for instance)
